The EU and China have been strategic partners since 2003 – it was a partnership that was extended 5 years ago by the EU-China 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation.
German chancellor Angela Merkel was promoting CAI and expressing her vision of how the EU should handle relations with China amid suggestions the US and European Union should form an alliance to counter Beijing.
However, EU officials and politicians have been expressing increasing concerns over China.
