Would the decoupling between the West and China be as smooth as the one for Bill and Melinda Gates?
Is that the only solution? Instead, we believe China should be more integrated with the West.
Decoupling or Containment ought not be seen as a valid strategy! If this kind of protectionism takes hold, it will hurt export-dependent economies like Germany or Belgium.
If trade between the European Union (EU) and China were to come to a halt, everyday goods would become dearer for the European countries – to the detriment of the lower income category. Not only would that make no economic sense, but it would also cause social injustice.
The EU should not “decouple” from China nor should it try to “contain” China. Instead, the EU should rely on its strengths and adopt its own geo-strategic position. The EU can be the mediator between the USA and China.
Ideally, Europe should speaks with one voice on both security and economic issues.
Otherwise, the EU will be seen as an extension of the American foreign policy and will not be a good position for EU on the global stage.
